RERC on Accessible Public Transportation
State University of New York at Buffalo
Principal Investigator: Edward Steinfeld, ArchD
Dates: June 8, 2011 Toronto, Canada
Focus: The Next Generation Accessible Bus: Conference will focus on both research and the practice of accessible and universal design in public transportation. Research topics will include effectiveness research, human factors research, methods development, evaluation research, and theory. Practice topics will include evidence-based guidelines, evaluation tools, and best practice examples of transportation systems and products. Planning for the SOS conference is already underway. The RERC-APT plans to produce a publication, Universal Design of Public Transportation Systems, from the proceedings of the State of the Science (SOS) conference. As part of the SOS conference, the RERC-APT will be co-sponsoring the "Next Generation Accessible Bus" Design Competition. The goal is to find innovative design solutions that will improve the future of public transportation.
In addition, we have created an online survey to investigate the user requirements for patrons of public transit buses. The study investigates getting on and off public buses, circulating inside buses, understanding the communication and information systems of public buses, as well as issues concerning rider safety. The information collected from this study should help identify the aspects of using public buses that merit further detailed experimental research in controlled settings. Please take a moment and follow this link http://www.udeworld.com/surveys/transitbusstudy.html to access the survey.
